Dance ClubWelcome to the CCHS Dance Club web page How does one define dance? Is it the execution of multiple pirouettes to a Tchaikovsky ballet? Is it the abstract expression and grounded strength of a modern piece? Is it the sensual rhythm and syncopated beat of a Latin salsa? The answer is that all of these and more represent the styles and techniques of contemporary dance. The CC Dance Club is a place for dancers of all levels to meet, learn, and express themselves through different types of movement. One of our goals is to introduce our teens to as many different dance styles as possible. Each type of dance offers a different vocabulary, a different emotion expressed, a different type of physicality. With a knowledge of these styles, a dancer is better able to appreciate the art of dance. Furthermore, if choreography is an interest, being exposed to a wide variety of dance allows each dancer a much larger repertoire of moves to integrate into a piece. _____________________________________________________ Rhythm, Rhythm and more Rhythm Although the Dance Club is still formulating its workshop schedule for the 2007-08 school year, the focus in the first few months will be rhythmic dance. With the upcoming winter musical being "Crazy for You", a Gershwin musical which highlights tap dancing, the understanding of rhythm and syncopation is key in pulling off high quality dance numbers. Although Dance Club has been typically a feeder system for the musical, even those who are not planning on audition can drop in and enjoy any one of the workshops. The workshops and regular Dance Club meetings take place every Friday from 2:30 to 4 in the CCHS auditorium. The first workshop will be African dance taught by Alice Heller on September 21st. There will be live drumming, and all are welcome. This is a great way to start the year, because all rhythmic dance was derived from African dance, so students will learn the fundamentals of this type of movement. Then, there will be eight tap workshops taught by Becky Robichaud, a professional tap teacher with the Dance Inn, and a former Rockette. Becky has also choreographed "Crazy for You" for the Reagle Players in Waltham. There will be a couple of weeks in which the students will formulate a number for the Spirit Assembly which is held just before Thanksgiving. Finally, in December, at the last workshop of the calendar year we will offer a Hip Hop workshop, with the teacher to be announced in the next few weeks. The Dance Club is a fun and energetic group of people. Please have your students join us on Friday afternoons at 2:30 in the auditorium. We look forward to meeting them! Dance Club meets every Friday from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. in the CCHS Auditorium. No dance experience is necessary. All abilities are welcome.
