Alumni News-June 2006

June, 2006

Mike Lazar ’02 has very exciting news! The day after his graduation from the Tisch School at NYU, he learned after four callbacks that he was cast in the Equity national tour of Seussical the Musical. He will get his Equity card, begin rehearsals in September, and kick off performances October 13th! He is thrilled that he has his first serious professional job and was fortunate enough to land a national tour. In Mike’s words, “Yahoo!!! I’m counting my lucky stars.”

Becky Broadwin ’04 who played in the CCHS Orchestra is a rising junior at Union College in Schnectady, NY. Becky has not played her viola since the last concert at CCHS but continues to run—she is on the Cross Country team at Union. Becky is a History major and was accepted into a cross-cultural studies in Vietnam for the Fall term this coming year. Also at Union she is a member of their education council which helps the College set curriculum, and a member of the student government.

Megan Broadwin ’04, also a violist in the CCHS Orchestra, is pursuing a dual degree program at Washington University in St. Louis which will allow her to graduate with both a BA and MA in History, with a French minor in addition. She joined the Delta Gamma sorority, and serves as a Peer Advisor for the University. Megan has continued private viola lessons and plays in the Wash U orchestra. She will go to France for a Junior Semester abroad in the Spring semester this coming year.

David Ballard ’03 has recently completed his junior year at Emerson College, where he is majoring in Acting, with an emphasis on Musical Theater. In late April he played leading roles in two one-act Georges Feydeau farces with the Adams House Drama Society at Harvard University. This summer he is participating in two different theater programs in New York City. The American Theater Wing runs the first, “Springboard NYC,” an intensive program designed to help theater students make the transition from college to careers in New York. Taught by industry professionals, it includes audition training, helps students develop contacts with directors, producers, casting agents, and managers, and teaches hands-on skills for surviving in the world of New York theater. David will also attend a comprehensive five-week musical theater workshop produced by a collaboration of the York Theater and Marymount Manhattan College.

Kevin Ballard ’03, David’s twin brother, who worked Tech, played in the pit orchestra, and even appeared onstage once while at CCHS, is currently taking a break from studying computer science at Worcester Polytech, and is working as a student intern at Yahoo! in Sunnyvale, CA, until the end of the summer.

Valerie Schmidt ’02 and Irene Schmidt ’02 both graduated from Kenyon College on May 20, 2006. Valerie received her degree in Psychology, and Irene graduated cum laude with a double degree in Anthropology and Psychology. Valerie got a leadership award for her participationin the Kenyon Ball Room Dance Club, where she was competition coordinator, while Irene was a member of the Chamber Singers, the major singing ensemble on campus. Both alumnae are back in the Boston area. Valerie is sharing an apartment with Carolyn Barnes ’02 in Boston for the summer, looking for a job while applying to the Peace Corps, and for fun is thinking of joining the MIT Ballroom Dance Team which allows non-students to participate. Irene hopes to find an apartment in Cambridge/Boston while she assesses her options, and hopes to do some traveling.

Polly Sturges ’04 has just completed her sophomore year at Wheaton College in Norton, MA. Polly is majoring in Psychology and has been working at the campus pre-school and the library. She served this year as the co-chair of the Commencement-Reunion committee. This summer she has returned to Concord to work for her fourth summer at the Concord Children’s Center. Polly continues to enjoy attending A cappella and theater productions in Boston and Providence.
